Nurturing Children’s Curiosity through the Senses

There’s something special about the first time young learners explore the sounds a dry leaf makes, feel what happens to dirt when water is added, or hear the buzz of a hummingbird’s wings.

In our Pre-K classrooms at Excelsior and Portola, curiosity is fostered through free play and sensory activities that deepen children’s learning. Teachers incorporate natural materials into daily lessons and children spend unstructured time inventing stories together.
By building opportunities for children to plant seeds and look closely at ladybugs and butterflies, they grow their understanding of and enthusiasm for the world around them. Learning that uses children’s five senses supports healthy brain development, and it’s fun for kids to experiment in safe, nurturing environments.
We love having two Pre-K classrooms that are always brimming with giggles, as kids get their hands messy or shake and wiggle to a new song. With Fall sessions just beginning, we’re excited to see where kids’ curiosity will take them!
